Welcome to a real holiday! Switch off your mobile. There’s no signal anyway, and do you really want that call from work? Forget about flight delays, airstrikes, travel company collapse and traffic congestion. The only hold up on these quiet lanes is the odd herd of sheep being driven along the road. Sit and do nothing. Put your feet up, you’re on holiday! The chairs are comfy and you can just stare out at the stunning views and listen to the river below - with or without a glass of wine, it’s still relaxing! Watch the wildlife. Too many birds to list! Foxes, hedgehogs, badgers and otters- they are all here. Our bird boxes and animal residences are generally busy! Play some old fashioned games. Quality family time without the electronics! Wildlife quizzes, puzzles, board games, cards or just read one of the many, many books on the shelves. Get fit and slim. No need for a gym, just use the maps, guided walks and cycle routes to see the countryside up close. You won’t need the car; there are planned routes straight from the cottage. Wait for it to rain - it does, sometimes - then go to the Elan Valley Nature reserve. Wales’ very own lake district; after rain, the water cascading over the dams is spectacular. Have lunch, and on the way back, indulge in a cream tea in one of Rhayader’s teashops. See Red Kites being fed at Gigrin Farm. Up to 400 kites, as well as buzzards, arrive to be fed at 1400 GMT (that’s 3pm in summer) all year round. Be Green. We have the GTBS Gold award for sustainable practices, but we like to think we can demonstrate that you can be green and still be warm and comfortable too. Have fun watching the energy monitor when you turn on the kettle! The kids will love it! Indulge yourself with the Best Breakfast anywhere (we think) at DeGrey’s in Ludlow, or the best fish and chips in Wales at the seaside in Aberdovey. Go to one of our nearby pubs for great food - it’s all locally sourced. Enjoy real Welsh flavours and specialities and crafts from local shops, farms and other outlets. Meet the alpacas as well as the Jacob sheep and lambs on our smallholding. Come and help at feeding time! Have a day out. We are well sited for day trips to North, Mid and South Wales; there are lots of border castles. Comprehensive information and a file full of suggestions available. Stay closer to home; visit Knighton, a charming old-fashioned town with its friendly atmosphere and distinctive selection of shops. Or visit Newtown, with its gallery, theatre and museums. Just enjoy being here! Most of all enjoy the valley and its community. This is still a quiet peaceful friendly place; tourists are less common here but those who do come return again and again.
